The Penguin Poets series has undergone plenty of face lifts in its long history. The first Poets book, on Tennyson, was published in 1941; it and the next two featured a gray cover with a white nail on the front. When Tschichold arrived in 1948, he revamped the series by creating a bordered design that began as light green; Schmoller in 1954 then shifted the covers to more colorful, wallpaper-inspired backgrounds. In 1963, the design was altered subtly again to create much more vivid patterns. In 1966, Facetti changed the look again, this time to embrace the Helvetica that had become mainstream in most of the other series, while maintaining the patterns.
Housed within the Poets section are three subseries: Modern European Poets, Penguin Modern Poets, and the Poet to Poet line. While accorded their own subtitle, they also maintained the “D” prefix of the Poets series, and so are included here.
The Poets series crossed the dividing line of 1970, when Penguin abandoned its numbering system, instead printing the ISBN along the spine. D116, Children of Albion, was the last to be numbered. The rest of the books in this list have been calculated by using the pattern of ISBN numbers that followed (117X, 118X, etc.) I have ended the collection at D198 because the next ISBN, 199X, belongs to the Penguin Classics line and will be found there.
