The first generation of Penguin Classics arose in 1946 with E.V. Rieu’s translation of the Odyssey, and he became the editor of the series until his death in 1964. With the exception of a few early titles in 1946, as shown on the left, the entirety of this edition were designed by Jan Tschichold and maintained until 1963. The colors of the books reflected the original language of the work; there were seventeen colors in all. Numbers in the Penguin Classics series are prefixed with an “L”.

I now have the photos of the first 121 penguins in first edition. Except Tales from Chehov L96. These are all the Jan Tschichold covers in the series. I also have the names of the book missed: books L113,L114, L118. I love your site and if you would like them I can send you a link so you can copy them. I could of course try to email them to you. Thanks
