The history of this long-running series is in large part the history of one man, Nikolaus Pevsner, who spearheaded the project and wrote three quarters of the books himself, co-authoring the rest. The series was well-esteemed and, like many well-esteemed projects, financially troubled; a grant from the Leverhulme trust helped to make up for the earnings shortfall. Ad yet not only did Pevsner champion the project to completion before his death, he spawned a continuation in both the Buildings of Scotland and Ireland, separate series that he served as EIC and which were published by Yale, rather than Penguin. The series is now generally referred to as the “Pevsner Books.” It’s quite a legacy for a man who was once an early Hitler supporter, then a German half-Jewish exile in London, whose first work for Penguin was written in an internment camp.
