Not to be confused with Penguin Classics Red, which are a red-tinged version of the recent 4th edition of Penguin Classics, this subset bears more in common with the Great Loves series, with striking monochromatic covers and recycled paper binding. These books, however, are generally longer than the usual Penguin subseries, and are oriented toward horror and the macabre. Their official title according to Penguin’s website, is “Gothic Classics”, despite the fact that this appears nowhere on the books. To be even more confusing, the Red Classics are actually colored canary yellow, in order to differentiate them from the red-tinged first series of Great Ideas. Whew.

“The Haunted Doll’s House” is written by M.R. JAMES, not Smith.
I just ordered The Lair of the White Worm! These editions aren’t published in the US, so the book is being shipped from Berlin. Are these the only 10 books in the series?
